My 2020 Albums of the Year

newsletter.synthicator.com

In 2020, more than ever I relied on music to get me through the year. These are the albums that I thought were my most favourite albums throughout the year.

Like my GOTY 2020 post, these aren't in any particular order or ranking. I loved all of these albums for different reasons and ranking them would be doing them a disservice.

Let's get started.

Dua Lipa - Future Nostalgia

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HDEHj2yzew

Dua Lipa is currently one of most favourite pop artists. Her second album Future Nostalgia is filled with fantastic production and catchy hooks that make you want to get up and dance. Every track is a bop and her music videos are all fantastic as well. I embed the one for Physical above but its worth going through all of them and giving them a watch, trust me on that.

It really is a album where it is hard for me to pick a single favourite track, but if I had to pick one, it would be Levitating. Or Physical. Or Don't Start Now. You get the point.

I am looking forward to what else she is going to be releasing in the future, I feel we are just getting started on the Dua Lipa era.

Lil Uzi Vert - Eternal Atake

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3Bm2nlk8pU

This is really the first time I've listened to a Lil Uzi Vert and Eternal Atake is just a solid trap rap album. Filled with a bunch of fun beats, this is one for the club which this year is just blasting this out of your speaker system at home.

Favourite tracks - You Better Move, Homecoming, Prices.

Knxwledge - 1988

https://youtu.be/N9ff07MnTEI

Knxwledge is straight up one of my favourite hip-hop producers out right now. This album is filled with some fantastic sampling and smooth beats. This one you put on when you just want to chill out.

Its also available on Bandcamp so if you wanna buy it, go do it that way.

Hard to pick a favourite track from this one as they are all pretty short and blend into each other as a cohesive unit which is another reason this album works pretty well.

Run the Jewels - RTJ4

https://youtu.be/5dgH1mlXDhA

This year more than ever, it felt like Run the Jewels' music is more relevant than ever. This is the album to punch fascists to.

Favourite tracks - walking in the snow, a few words for the firing squad, out of sight.

Logic - No Pressure

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfcBswn2nH8

I wrote a showcase post about this album last year and I still think this is quite possibly the best Logic album ever and it really shows a more thoughtful, introspective and frankly more interesting side of him.

Favourite tracks - Open Mic/Aquarius III, Perfect, DadBod.

Conway the Machine - From King to a GOD

https://youtu.be/6TX0kaDKBzo

The Griselda crew is full of incredibly talented and interesting artists but personally Conway the Machine is my most favourite of them. If I had to use a single word to describe this album, it would be - grimy. From the beats to Conway's lyricism, the album has a certain gritty weight to it.

Favourite tracks - Lemon, Juvenile Hell, Anza, Fear Of God.

The Weeknd - After Hours

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4NRXx6U8ABQ

2016's Starboy remains one of my most favourite albums ever. I was curious if The Weeknd could top that album and turns out he can. After Hours is a return to a darker and moodier version of The Weeknd and I really really like it. The production on this remains top notch.

Favourite tracks - Heartless, Blinding Lights, Snowchild, In Your Eyes.

Also, fuck the Grammies.

Boldy James & The Alchemist - The Price of Tea in China

https://youtu.be/_TSmxbnEDD4

Boldy James was not on my radar before this album dropped. One way to catch my attention is to have The Alchemist's production on your album and boy does this album deliver. Just smooth lyric delivery from Boldy combined with The Alchemist's one of a kind talent for setting the atmosphere with his beats.

Favourite tracks - Giant Slide, Scrape The Bowl, Slow Roll.

Freddie Gibbs & The Alchemist - Alfredo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09pjULtApQs

Another slam dunk by The Alchemist. This time with Freddie Gibbs on the lyrics. Honestly, The Alchemist has had an incredible year as far his production goes. So many good beats.

Favourite tracks - 1985, Scottie Beam, Frank Lucas.

RMR - DRUG DEALING IS A LOST ART

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sllUioMHJY

RMR's voice just has this melodic quality to it that I really love. His debut album this year was on repeat a lot for me and I'm wondering what this dude is gonna do in the future.

Favourite tracks - DEALER, NOUVEAU RICHE, RASCAL.

Honorable Mentions

This is a list of albums that I also liked listening to this year but don't have much else to say about them.

  • Powderpaint by Powderpaint

  • Resonance by Yumiko Morioka

  • Go Bravely by Denise Chaila

  • Seven Times Down Eight Times Up by Elzhi

  • Haven Original Soundtrack by Danger

Wrapping this show up

That's all from me folks. Here's hoping that 2021 is a better year for all of us.

Stay safe.
